This weekend, as the Nation celebrates our Independence, bright flashes of light fill the skies accompanied by audible booms. Last night for 22 minutes I stood on my balcony with remote sensor in hand continuously opening and closing the shutter on my Canon capturing the glorious event with 130 pictures.
When it was all over, I twiddled my thumbs as I transferred the images to my computer and I started to think about how much I enjoy the spectacular light shows, but cringe at the thought of the amount of money wasted on such vivacious celebrations. Thousands of dollars literally destroyed in minutes with nothing left to show for it.
Outside my condo, patrons at the lower level restaurants and others sprawled out in Turner Park let out loud cheers, claps and whistles and then either returned to enjoying their meals or got up and walked away. Traffic heading West increased for the next 30 minutes as the thousands of people that had gathered downtown to watch the event returned home.
This was only one of the many fireworks extravaganzas that will be held throughout the city this weekend. I shutter to think at how much money will go up in smoke and how that money could be used for a much better purpose. Nevertheless it is a celebration of our Freedom, something most Americans take for granted. Happy Birthday, America!
